Ayi Kwei Armah's novel about post-independence Ghana "The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born" is among the most powerful post-colonial novels and arguably the best book ever written in Ghana. Published shortly after the end of the Nkrumah-government, it has become a timeless description of a country struggling to work its way into a functioning society that is truly African. Its powerful images of filth and corruption stick to the mind, but its key message also hints at the need to drive development based on what is truly coming from Ghana. "The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born" therefore offers a rich source of inspiration to take stock of Ghana by using its descriptive approach, documenting the state of affairs through a lucid eye and with a strong engagement.
Based on this, Studio Kurtycz, The Goethe Institute and the 21 artists collaborating in the project present to you a special Art Event that resonates with the ideas of the novel. Using different means of expression, taken from the domain of fine and applied arts, dance and music, today's Ghana is revisited through the lens of the Beautyful Ones. Situated in two locations: the neighbourhood of La (at the beach front, next to the Artists Alliance) and the Goethe Institute (East Cantonments), the exhibition documents contemporary Ghana, in search of today's "Beautyful Ones". The artifacts are partly shown in situ to bring them back to the place that inspired them; the other part is presented in the museum-like environment that the Goethe Institute offers, in an attempt to distil emblematic elements, insisting both on the beauty of things and the messages that they invoke.
"The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born" is a collaborative art project between Studio Kurtycz, The Goethe Institute and the artists of La and Accra.
